Studio Manager

Core Reponsibilities

Third Place Pottery is growing rapidly and looking to hire a full time (40hrs/wk) studio manager. Come build a community-focused space with us!

The Studio Manager oversees studio personnel, develops systems and processes, and expands the studio’s offerings in alignment with the community centered mission of Third Place Pottery. 

 

Core Reponsibilities

  • Serve as a steward of the studio’s values (curiosity, empathy, respect and community) in communications with the staff and studio community.
    • Open to giving and receiving constructive feedback 
    • Clear and timely communication across staff, instructors, and members 
    • Act proactively, with accountability, and strong communication 
    • Be attentive to detail and the experience of others
  • Oversee the operation and sustainable growth of Third Place Pottery. This includes:
    • Expand and refine studio services
    • Promote the studio and its classes, review membership applications, and onboard new members
    • Collaborate with the leadership team to develop, document, and implement processes that support the studio
    • Hire staff to fulfill business needs 
  • Manage and support other managers and staff by empowering them to succeed in their roles, support their ongoing development and on-the-job learning, and be prepared to step into any role as needed
  • Ensure day-to-day studio operations run smoothly.
    • Monitor the condition of all studio equipment including pottery wheels, kilns, and shelving, and coordinate their repair 
    • Install new studio equipment
    • Promote and model safe studio practices, including keeping a consistently clean, safe, and welcoming studio environment
    • Be responsive to urgent issues outside standard business hours when necessary 
    • Address emergent, hands-on studio needs such as access issues or supply shortages 
    • Be able to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining good relationships with members and staff 
    • Ensure timely movement of work through the kiln process 
    • Ensure adequate inventory of supplies and materials, including reserve stock
    • Source and pick up supplies as required to keep operations running smoothly 
    • Advice studio owner on business decisions e.g. membership pricing

Qualifications

  • Some form of management experience (professional or volunteer) 
  • Experience in process development, documentation and training 
  • Experience in a community space 
  • Experience with digital media, marketing and communication 
  • Basic understanding of glaze 
  • Basic understanding of kiln firing 
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds 
  • Access to reliable transportation for studio errands
  • Personal device with internet access
  • Personal phone for communications with outside vendors

Working Conditions

  • The manager will work in the studio and remotely. 
  • Responsibilities will require evening and weekend hours  
  • The position involves a significant amount of contact with members, students, and the public. The manager must be able to relate well to individuals from various backgrounds and positively represent the studio in these relationships.  
  • Studio work involves exposure to clay and glaze materials, kiln heat, and occasionally using power tools. Must follow all safety guidelines and be willing and able to clean and maintain studio spaces regularly. 

Pay and Benefits

Third Place Pottery staff are foundational to the community that we are building. We are providing the following compensation package to invest in our people.

$48,000 - $57,600 a year 

$300 a month health care stipend 

2 weeks PTO

67 cents per mile for business-related travel using your personal vehicle.

Free 24/7 studio access
